I’ve heard it said that the Steelers will win the Super Bowl because they have the better historical roots and their players are inspired to uphold the tradition. I’m not really zealous about which one wins, though I lean more to the Steelers as do the Vegas odds-makers. But, you know what? This isn’t about football, but about a WORD that I put in that first sentence. The can or worms I am opening up here today will be continued off and on for several months, but one can only take so much FUN at a time.

If Jesus Christ was a real human Person- if, in theological terms, there was a true incarnation and not a mere theophany in human form, – then He was an individual living under historical conditions and limitations.” Edgar Goodspeed
For most Christians, that statement would put them into a religious tailspin. The thought of the Son of God with limitations? God forbid! However, didn’t He say repeatedly that He could ONLY DO what the Father told Him to do? Talk about slapping some limitations on a person. How much of your day do you think was authorized by God? And where we miss so much of what the Bible has to say to us is that we forget it was written, said, and done in a specific time in history.

I grew up being told to “use my brains”! Get a college education or you’ll not get ahead (so I did). Develop your knowledge capabilities, stay informed, and keep reading (and I have). Being raised in a military environment (dad and step-dad), I learned early the importance of being under authority and even respecting authority. If you’re told to do something, you do it, without question (Luke 5:5). So, I did it- all, without questioning.

February 5, 2006 – I am more intimate with God today than yesterday because I wanted it so.
How different is Christianity of today versus 1,900 years ago?
It really does pain me to even think about this topic. I’ve gone there before and come away with a feeling of guilt and insecurity. It’s different today though. Today I have an optimism that though the difference is like day and night, God is about to bring light once more. He is the initiator you know. Yes, we can accept or reject his offerings, we still have free will; however, He can offer in such ways that we simply cannot refuse. Believe me, I know.

Do you really love me?
Does that phrase ever haunt you, or maybe just bother you a little: make you a bit uncomfortable? For most men, I think the answer is more yes than with women. I’m talking in reference to God: God asking us that question. Not just once but three times He asked that question of Peter. Ouch!

A Follow Up
I wasn’t planning on doing a follow up on yesterday’s “can of worms”, or maybe I should say Pandora’s box. However, two things compelled me to do so. The first is because of the good response that I got from Friday’s commentary and the intelligent questions I was asked which I think need clarification. I get e-mails from as far away as Italy, Japan, California and host of other states. When you venture out into cyber-space, you never know who is reading!
