The Matrix

From time to time we snap out of that Matrix wherein all of the electrical stimulants imprison us. But seldom!

Every now and then there are personal and societal moments wherein we are forced to get real, and live not by what sensually beckons our attention, but by what we know to be REAL! It was on one September morning, the eleventh to be exact, when the world seemed to stop. First one plane and then another slam into the World Trade Center Twin Towers. As we sit in amazement, glaring at what is transpiring, our emotions are taken to another level; our imaginations scanning the brain for some answers, as we see both towers collapse.

We saw the unbelievable, and we stood still, for a few days!

Sacred Literature

We moderns, tainted by the scientific method, have forgotten how to read sacred literature. We look for empirical truth when the stories are full of mythical, symbolic images. In order to understand our Scriptures, we must be willing to look for the symbols, to treat sacred stories as powerful, truth-bearing stories, not historical reporting, so says Richrd Rohr.

How have we become so deceived, so lost to the TRUTH?

But worse than that, we want to kill those who don’t SEE things as we do, even though we see dimly, at best.

Worldview

Jesus was rejected because of His worldview. He saw the world differently

The principle is still in play today. Say anything bad, though true, of our many sacred cows and you’re in deep yogurt. Unfortunately there are as many sacred cows in the church today as there are in the world. Every time one of those trophies is taken off the shelf, pain and anger arise. I know! I have a lot more room for books on the shelf now. I face the same fears as you when my world is rocked, when something I’ve held as true for decades is suddenly smashed into pieces.

Cultural Myths

May 7, 2006 – There are so many things that we know are true and yet are not. There are so many things that I used to believe that I don’t know; and how many of those things that I now believe, will I still believe tomorrow? We know the world is full of cultural myths, so what do we call the things we now embrace that are not of God?

What’s Your Approach

What’s your approach to religion- God?

In Jesus’s day, the Jews had three basic options. The Essenes took the hide out in the caves until God shows up strategy. The lifestyle at Herod’s Temple was just too busy, noisy, and worldly. So in this dualist approach (the world is evil and the spirit is good), it became “all about ME”, and me was going into seclusion. The kids would be home-schooled, there would be no movies or TV, and there would be no interaction with those of a different ilk particularly.

The second approach was that which was taken by the Sadducees which was to cooperate with Rome. Don’t fight the system, integrate with it. Don’t make waves, but make friends with those in power. Get all the wealth and gusto that life has to offer and defend your personal empires. Embrace capitalism!

He Is Not a Genie

We’ve made the God of the universe our personal genie- unknowingly.

I say unknowingly because I know that we know it can’t be that way; however, our behaviors and beliefs belie the reality. We perceive Jesus as the divine titular head of our denomination and personal belief structure, which means He is not your God! And without knowing it, we’ve so defined Him in our mental, literal, and intellectual exercises that He’s no longer God of any substance at all.

God cannot be defined! In so doing, you’ve missed Him!

Rescue Us

Can the world be rescued? Can we?

That is the question I will attempt to answer this Sunday, and come Monday you can listen to that feeble effort by simply clicking on to that second blue box titled, to the right of this commentary- Awakend Awareness.

I doubt anyone would question God’s ability to do in Isaiah 65:17 or in a chapter later (Is. 66:22) what He says will happen: a new earth will be created. But what about you and I? Can we do it? Now that’s a totally different issue altogether isn’t it. And surely you KNOW that is God’s plan.

Where Are Your Investments?

I am investing my life in Jesus! Having said that I am not proud of the rate of return I’ve been able to get for Him, but I am increasingly investing it all (me) at high risk ventures that could , and I hope will, make up for lost time.

But, one could lose it ALL you say! Isn’t that the ultimate plan?

If there’s one thing I don’t want to do, it’s to be deceived about what it is I am investing my life in. Anyone who has bought stock, options, or traded in a commodity that eventually went south leaving you holding an empty bag, or worse, scrambling for more to meet the margin calls, knows what I am talking about.

Change Is Coming

If there is anything I know and sense, it is that CHANGE is coming. We are probably in the early stages of whatever it means. Change is always happening; however, I am talking about SOMETHING GREAT! Those two words have been at the top of my daily reminder for 3+ years now. Lots of good things have happened within those last 3-4 years; however, nothing has been able to measure up to what I’ve sensed those two words meant in my spirit.

Change is constant (no pun intended) and change brings regression.
