Everyone wants enlightenment and we even had a 150 year period called such; however, true enlightenment comes only by the Spirit, not the intellect.

Why would God create something for destruction, let alone eternal destruction? Why would God create anything that’s less than perfect? Why would God say that man was created in his image and then say that it’s evil? Why would God say mankind (can you say ALL?) that he created is GOOD and then interpret that as the moment we come into the world we’re full of SIN because of something a metaphorical (as in not historical-literal) man did in an allegorical garden setting some eons ago? If there is anything that should be obvious that we could ALL agree upon it is that the Bible is full of contradictions. Why I wrestled with this for so long in my spiritual journey can only be attributed to the blind submissiveness I embraced from my pastoral leaders. I have to think that it is “unknowningly” that much of the church has relegated humanhood to being something much lower than angels, and children of a lesser God. St. Augustine’s approach to sex and original sin dug such a huge theological hole (that religion has enthusiastically supported) mankind has yet to free himself from such negative consequences. If our world is ever going to be transformed, saved from destroying itself, we must be delivered from dualism, from the us vs. them, from me vs. you, and from the notion that unless one says some magical phrases that sounds like “Jesus is Lord”, everyone else is going to hell and only those who say the “magic words” are saved. In fact, where we have to start is with the whole heaven and hell (after life as reward-punishment concept) carrot and stick thinking. One of my favorite books from the recent past is the humorous, but painfully true book by Spencer Burke entitled, “A Heretic’s Guide to Eternity”. It’s sad that Christians feel such a need to be RIGHT and as a result create more DIVISION. Why can’t we learn to live more peacefully, fully, and lovingly?
