Religion(s) necessarily cover the spectrum of theological ideas. For me the book ends are Gothic and New Thought.
I use the word Gothic in the sense wherein the religion is ancient, often violent, rests primarily on tradition, and holds to an atmosphere of degeneration and decay. I know it will offend some when I say this is where I put Catholicism and Protestantism. But, an honest look at the 2,000 history (primarily Catholicism) which includes the Crusades, Inquisitions, and ex-communications, etc., how does one deny the violence. How does one deny the traditions so doctrinally protected, etc.?
And, how can one deny the loss of membership in mainline religions over the last five or so decades?
New Thought is basically that- NEW! The New Thought Movement is a spiritual movement which developed in the United States during the late 19th century and emphasizes metaphysical beliefs. It consists of a loosely allied group of religious denominations, secular membership organizations, authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of metaphysical beliefs concerning the effects of positive thinking, the law of attraction, healing, life force, and creative visualization among other things.
Basically we’re looking at conservative vs. liberal theology although the lines are blurred.
As Richard Rohr said, “I wish Protestants had reformed Catholicism”. The Reformation just changed IDOLS! Protestants rejected an INFALLIBLE POPE for an INERRANT BOOK! What’s up with that? The New Thought movement, which includes many denominations and “non-denominational denominations” were basically more tolerant, easy going, inclusive, and non-dogmatic. Is there any wonder why more people are leaving the mainstream for the fringes- without giving up their love for God and Jesus?
Goodbye 2010
Can you think back to where the year began? Does anyone remember the devastating Haiti earthquake that killed 230,000+ people or was that too long ago, ancient history?
We suffer from too short memories and collective as well as individual AMNESIA. But try and jog your memory if you will as to where you were spiritually twelve months ago. And if you can find some “markers” ask yourself what’s changed in the last twelve months? Hopefully you can have some answers- some SPECIFICS!
Have you GROWN spiritually in the last year or just kept on doing the same-old-same-old stuff?
The Kingdom is built on growth and I’m not talking about OUTER material things, but INNER growth and enlightenment (Luke 17:21- The Kingdom of God is WITHIN). Sometimes it’s difficult for us to SEE or even SENSE that we’re changed or are being TRANSFORMED; however, those around us can be our best witness. When’s the last time someone mentioned to you that they SEE that you’re changed, are different, etc?
So, as we say GOODBYE to 2010 can we also think of a couple of egoic traits that we KNOW that we also need to say GOODBYE to as well? And, maybe HELLO, to more unconditional love for all of those that we come into contact with in 2011?
Maybe?
