You know what they be, right?
Well, once upon a time I was a pretty good one! If you disagreed with me I could come down on your head pretty hard with good old Bible Verses. Dueling Scriptures was my game. I knew exactly what every Scripture meant. I knew what the author intended. I was a genius!
Not!
One of the things that I was very much blind to how far OFF I was from BEING what it was that I was SAYING the Bible meant. If you believed baptism was valid by sprinkling, I could nail you. If you though there were five sacraments, I could nail you. If you thought……….enough already.
I THOUGHT a lot, but ACTED very little.
You see, it was very evident to those whom I was THUMPING that I was not BEING what I was saying we were to all be. How can you love the Bible, defend it to the death, and bash others over the head when they have a differing doctrine while still believing in capital punishment, wars, and violence of any sort?
How do you do that?
Celibate priests focused on abortion, heterosexuals focused on gay-lesbian lifestyles, and liberals-conservatives focused on social issues and policies that were to their liking only. The only thumping that should be going on is when you hit yourself upside the head for being so critical, judgmental, and non tolerant!
The Greater Source
Too often we expect too little because we look to ourselves as the source!
Beyond whatever good and big things you and your mind-will-emotions can conjure up and pursue, there’s something GREATER awaiting those who so choose. It’s the FREE WILL thing again! We have so many choices: which is good news and bad news. Here’s what I have discovered.
I have LIMITATIONS!
Many people refuse to even admit such. While they may not go as far as some in claiming that they are God, it just goes against their psyche to admit any sort of limitations. I’ve discovered that denial of reality really isn’t all that preferable to truth. Granted, I don’t give in very easily; however, I do know when my stick isn’t big enough. I like the way Richard Rohr has put it.
“Until you bottom out and come to the limits of your own fuel supply, there is no reason for you to switch to a higher octane fuel.”
Bingo!
I subscribe to open theism (somewhat), co-operative approach to life. There’s MUCH that I can do on my own because as Jesus said, “the Father and I are one”; however, it is too easy in the environment in which we live today to think that “I” (as in me) is ONE, and not that WE are one: the spirit that I am and the human that I am.
