St. Jerome said, “Nothing is so unclean as a woman in her periods; what she touches she causes to become unclean. So what if one of the early church fathers has such an opinion. It’s when the church adopts such “blood phobias” to deny people sacraments, mediation, and services that we’ve gone a bit too far. Leviticus 15:19-24 is one such example. Leviticus 18:19 is another wherein it’s written, “You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness.” What’s up with all this religious junk anyway?
Judaism was only following many of the ancient religions and beliefs that required “purification rites” for a woman after child birth. All the ceremonies and rites were one thing, but the lunatic beliefs that accompanied them were, and are totally insane.
Check these out.
1-Menstruating women polluted the water.
2-They would kill the fish.
3-They brought a curse to anyone who touched them during the days following their cycle.
4-Women were called “castrated men” during their menstrual cycle.
5-A woman’s hair would not curl during her cycle.
6-There was a superstition that the male organ would fall off if intercourse occurred during her menstrual cycle.
Misogyny still runs rampant in the church today though it manifests itself in a different fashion.
1-Women are denied critical positions within the church.
2-Women must submit to male authority in all circumstances.
3-Women cannot be ordained in most denominations.
4-And dozens of other prejudices abound.
Even the likes of Sigmund Freud suggested women suffered from “penis envy”. Yeah, sure!
Come on church. Wake up! Get real. Get over the blood phobias of the past and set women free to BE the whole and clean beings that they are: most in far better standing than most men! Who knows how great the church could become if we’d just get over our phobias.
