The church loves to blame original sin on Eve, who tempted Adam, who passed his blood line down to me. Say what? I’ve already mentioned the fact that if I believe in anything, I must follow Matthew Fox and his “original blessing” concept. Of course all Bible-believing Christians blame our mess on Satan, the Devil, the serpent. But, I really do need to ask the obvious question. How can any of this make sense when Adam and Eve are UNHISTORICAL?
You do know that the Genesis story is a myth right? ![]()
Neither CNN, nor FOXNews was there to give us accurate reporting. And saying that it was a myth doesn’t mean we throw it all out. Myths carry truths which are important to our understanding of self and society. Thus the origin of evil cannot be explained by original sin that started with Adam and Eve who did not exist and were not historical, material homo sapiens.
Thus there was no need to make an idol out of Mary, develop the immaculate conception, or annuncion theories to justify the “original sin” theory. Evolutionists have made logical sense (maybe not spiritual) as they contend since there was no primal man, there could not be a primal sin. Hmmmm.
So, where in the hell (metaphorically speaking) does that leave us?
Maybe we’re stuck with Emil Brunner’s comment that, “We cannot go further beyond this myth of Adam and Eve,” Somehow I just don’t want to leave it there!
We need to blame our pain on someone!
Maybe we could just simply say that because man is a “moral being“, he is capable of both good an evil. Maybe because man is conscious of his consciousness, he can choose to be and do whatever he wants which includes both good and bad actions. Maybe there’s no one to blame but ourselves, but then in today’s post modern society that just doesn’t seem politically correct does it!
It was so much easier when I just accepted my early doctrinal instruction and didn’t think! ![]()
