Process theology is the new kid on the block. Alfred North Whitehead is looked upon as the most recent author of this approach to philosophy, theology, and life. The concept was then followed up by Charles Hartshorne and many others. The simplicity of this line of thinking is that more important than BEING is our BECOMING! It’s not who or what we ARE but, where we are headed and how fast. So, how does this apply to the Bible as we revisit it?
One of the major ways that I have interpreted the Bible is PROGRESSIVELY! Mystics speak of the increasing CONSCIOUSNESS that mankind is experiencing. Both are different words for process theology. So, let me use my term primarily.
There’s no way that one can make sense out of the Old Testament God when compared to the New Testament Father that Jesus revealed, unless you interpret the Bible progressively. Marcion of Sinope had just such a problem that he felt that there were two gods. As as result he created the first ever NT canon (160ce) forcing the early church fathers to get serious about developing a canon.
It’s as simple as Is. 28:10 (line upon line).
5,000 years ago humanity wasn’t nearly as intelligent as they are today. They saw a world that was not REAL! The sun didn’t evolve around the earth, God wasn’t a monarchial king out to kill people He didn’t like, nor would He tell people to stone to death their kids for being rebellious.
Our doctrine is an evolving one (unless you’re fossilized in literal-fundamental belief systems). It wasn’t until 1854 that the Catholic Church adopted Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And then in 1870 the Infallibility of the Pope came along, followed in 1950 by the Corporeal Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These were all tenets of faith observed in varying degrees, but not adopted as official church dogma until the dates shown.
The botched Nicean Creed (325) was followed up and amended by the Council of Constantinople (381), which was altered by the Chalcedonian Creed in 451. Vatican II was the 21st such Council to be called by various Popes.
Have you heard about the Reformation?
It’s time for another one!
Church doctrine, theology, and tenets of faith have been changing for 2,000 years, but to some Christians any change is tantamount to heresy and the need to de-fellowship! God is ALIVE, not dead! The Spirit is moving, Jesus is interceding. It’s past time for the antiquated and stoic American Christian church to shake off the cobwebs and step into the 21st century with the freshness and boldness that the Spirit is awakening us!
Revisit the Bible with His Spirit- not denominational laws and constraints!
