I think I’m going to close with this commentary and move on to other issues, but maybe not! We shall see. The bottom line, to this point, is that the church (which has to change) has appeared to present this HUMAN, MALE, MAN is SEXLESS! I can understand the sensitivity of the topic. I also know that we must be far, far from the TRUTH, as the church still is bound by much insecurity, fear, and a need to control everyone’s thinking. And I believe more so the Catholic church with Benedict XVI’s proclamation that the priests need to go back to a Latin mass. What’s up with that, if not to keep people from knowing what’s TRUE> Make the Gospel easier- not harder. My God, what’s up with such a position anyway?
When you fear talking about sex as it might relate to Jesus, you’re telling the audience that Jesus was not HUMAN! And then when you add the virgin birth, a Holy Spirit Father, etc. you’ve just moved off the planet. Come back to earth!
There has been no attempt in these five commentaries to demean, belittle, or disparage Jesus- on the contrary. How He was conceived is so far down the ladder from the importance of how He LIVED! I’ve wanted to make sure that we see His humanity- that which made Him truly GREAT and says to us that we can indeed FOLLOW HIM! I don’t need a virgin birth story to tell me that Jesus was profoundly different. I don’t need an original sin story to tell me humans are flawed.
Duh!
Having hopefully cleared up any misgiving that a digital can bring, let me leave you with a trip through the book of Hebrews: a New Testament approved, canonized book! Right!
2:11- From commonstock!
Heb. 2:14- Sharing the same genetic inheritance, like the children of one family.
4:15- Tested in every way that we are
>5:1- Jesus was a MAN, taken from among MEN!
5.2- Beset by weaknesses
5:7-With loud cries and tears
And then a couple of others………..
Romans 8:3- Sent by God in a form like our sinful nature
II Cor. 5:21- Made Him one with the sinfulness of man
Gal. 3:13- For our sake He came under the curse and the custody of the law
Jesus came from the same gene pool that we all did! And ending with a statement from Karl Barth (1886 –1968, a Swiss Reformed theologian, was one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the Twentieth Century0, “Jesus was not a sinful MAN. But, inwardly and outwardly, His situation was that OF a sinful man. He did nothing that Adam did. But, He lived life in the form it must take on the basis and assumption of Adams, act…..Freely He entered into solidarity and necessary association with out lost existence. Only in this way could God’s revelation to us, our reconciliation to Him, manifestly become an event in Him and by Him.”
To Jesus may all glory be given!
