The church is without a doubt one of the most SEXIST institutions in the world. At one point in my life I was a part of keeping that the status quo. I’ve long since changed, or at least I think I have: or AM?. Can you believe that women couldn’t even vote in America until about eight decades ago. The year was 1920 to be exact. And while women have made great advances since then, the church is still dragging it’s religious, patristic, and prejudicial feet.
You’ve come a long way baby! Remember 1873?
Myra Bradwell went to law school. So? Women weren’t supposed to do that! But, she got a law degree and then wanted to be licensed to practice law. The state said NO! She took it to the USSC, and they said NO! Here in part are some of the reasoning the Supreme court of the land took (Justice Joseph Bradley writing).
“Man is or should be woman’s protector and defender. The paramount destiny and mission of women are to fulfill the noble and benign office of wife and mother. This is the law of the Creator” Sure blame it on God!
So, how could one fault the Baptists who in turn adopted such nonsensical rules. The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest protestant decision-making body has recently ruled that a woman must be SUBJECT to her husband in ALL things. She can teach, but she can not be a SENIOR pastor. God forbid we allowed a woman to have final say on anything!
And then there’s Pat Robertson who concluded, “The Feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.”
Isn’t it amazing, shocking, that today’s religious leaders hold such views?
