Action & Contemplation

Richard Rohr has a community in New Mexico called Action & Contemplation. He has mastered the concept of both-and or and-also that Walter Starcke has. From neighboring Texas, Walter Starcke professes the title of one of his books, The Double Thread. Instead of trashing and trying to beat the hell out of the flesh, both men adhere to a reverence for our humanity and our divinity.

Within the world-wide church community, the battle seems to be over head and heart! Of course the church, specifically because we have so many denominations, is into division, duality, and us vs. them. The Sufi Rumi said, “I have learned so much from God that I can no longer call myself a Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Jew.

The very, very spiritual, who say they are heart-oriented are want to avoiding anything that appears to be “intellectual“, and yet they adhere to 2,000+ year old doctrines that came out of some form of intellectualizing. Those who want to make sense out of the Bible raise the standard called TRUTH and put down anything that’s heart or spirit tainted.

Once again, it’s both! and-also, both-and.

It’a ALL GOD! All.

As we move from season to season in life, we should be found more intellectual in some seasons than spiritual, while reversing it in other seasons. Seasons can also be hours. Personally, I need to start my day in contemplation (prayer) before getting out of bed. I then move into action by checking out the overnight news (on the web), and getting a read on how I feel the world IS for this coming day. I then go back into contemplation (prayer and quietness followed by journaling). By then, it’s around 8am and I am ready for the day!

So, I think. So I feel.
