This is one of the most fascinating stories ever told. It’s also one of the most misunderstood because many theologians have taught their students that it’s a literal story. And since CNN wasn’t there to record the event (Oct. 23, 4004BCE?), nor was FoxNews, how did this ALLEGORY get so literalized other than starting from the premise that God told Moses (and others) what to write. Let me suggest another scenario.
Since it’s an allegory (as Paul affirmed about other OT stories- Gal. 4:24), filled with metaphors, it’s not factual. But, a thing doesn’t have to be a FACT to be TRUE.
I go with the premise that we were-are created in the IMAGE of God and that when God created humanhood it was a VERY GOOD thing! Those are TRUTHS that I embrace which means I don’t buy into the church teaching of original sin. I do love how don Miguel Ruiz put it, “We are born in TRUTH, but we grow up believing in LIES. One of the biggest lies in the story of humanity is the lie of our imperfection.”
Bingo! Click here and forget about original sin. 
As the apostle Paul reminded us, it’s what’s NOT SEEN that’s real- truth! Truth is real and so what is not truth is not real, but an illusion that looks real. LOVE is REAL!
Adam & Eve is story of US- humanity. Before we came into this third dimensional world we lived in the Garden of Eden, heaven, Paradise, with our Creator. Matthew Fox called our state of consciousness then “Original Innocence”, not original sin. Why would the Creator, who is LOVE, create inferior, flawed, and sinful humans? Tell me why a Creator would fo that!
Be the original state there, here, or somewhere else, I know not but this I do know.
At some point humanity bought into the lie of DUALITY! We considered the thought, entertained the fantasy that there might be a competing power- with the ONE POWER. How’s that work? All this junk is in our MIND. Our spirit knows different. And our spirit knows more than St. Augustine who saw SEX as SIN.
SEX is HEAVEN! But, I digress.
When we began to think dualistically, double minded, and double hearted, we became SEPARATE from our Creator. Isn’t it time to come back home, to join with the I AM that’s within, where the Kingdom IS, where Christ LIVES (within us) and the HOPE OF GLORY resides?
That’s my take on Adam and Eve. Some of it. Enough to chew on and if one is a fundamentalist, enough to cause one to throw up, I’m sure. 
My question to fundamentalists (I was one for 59 years)is, “How’s that DUALISTIC life working out for you.”
