I have a sign on my grease board. It’s been there for nearly 20 years. It simply says and asks, “Where’s Jesus In It?”. I used to use the grease board as my “story board”. Something I learned while in the business world, from Walt Disney, many years ago. Once I had a sermon in mind, I’d go back and ask myself. Okay, where’s JESUS in this message? Now, I do it all on power point digital pages.
A month ago or so I read a book by Rick McKinley entitled, Jesus In The Margins. While the story line is different than what I gleaned from the book, I got the message nonetheless. Yes, I had Jesus in every message, but He was “in the margins” and not at the core, the body of it!
Ouch!
I looked back at all the foundational teachings I had done: Timothy, Barnabas, James, Agabus, Moses, etc. He was there too, off in the margins. In this new season, I can’t get enough of Him, nor learn all that I can. Since He is INFINITE, I know it’s a never-ending journey. But, I’m on the road at least.
And while I have always been amazed at His humanity, I am now seeing so much more in who He IS (today- now)- and I am amazed! His divinity goes without saying; however, once we see Him as truly and fully human, we can’t help but ask ourselves- WHY NOT ME? I am a son of God, so why can’t I BE more like HE? Talk about a reason to live!
You want an exciting life: follow and really BE like JESUS!
South African scholar Albert Nolan said it. “We consistently underrate Jesus as a human figure in history.” Maybe it is because we subconsciously do it. Possible? Here’s what I am HEARING. When we accent His humanity, without denying His divinity (which He basically put in escrow with the Father while here on earth), we create a problem. And that would be? If He could DO it, BE it, why can’t we. Are we not the sons of God as well? Isn’t that what Paul tells us in Romans? Isn’t that what the Psalmist told us in the Old Testament?
Let’s go one better than NIKE! Let’s BE IT as well as just DOING IT!
