I am not against any group, denomination, or person(s). There are IDEAS though to which I am totally against. I just listed two in the headline which automatically gives you a clue that I am NOT a Catholic, but I do have many Catholic friends. I am not against Catholicism even though the Pope just reaffirmed that I am not a member of the true church- as though Jesus came to start a church in the first place. He did not! Bit I digress. Here’s my comment for this post. Continue reading ‘# 37- Neither Immaculate Nor Assumption’

I am very much a reader! I love to read. I have read tens of thousands of books, and yet the greatest moments in my life have come from a spirit to spirit encounter with God. It is recorded in the book of Jeremiah, chapter 31, and verse 33, “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the LORD. “I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” And yet religion tells us that it’s all about the BOOK! Continue reading ‘# 36- God Doesn’t Write Books!’
Every time there is some major weather catastrophe, the right wing, radical, literal, and fundamentalists come out screaming that it is the wrath of God! Why do insurance companies call national disasters an “act of God“? Hurricane Rita was the wrath of God. Hurricane Katrina was an act of God. Me thinks we think too much. And, we apparently think Old Testament and not the Kingdom like Jesus taught. Continue reading ‘# 35- Not Acts Of God’
Wake up! We’re living a nightmare, but we’re not dreaming. That red liquid you see isn’t wine, it’s blood! How can we extricate ourselves from the superstition and hell of literalism whether it be of Christian or Muslim origins? Literalism divides, is haughty, thinks it’s the only way, and is incapable of compassion or love outside of believing in what “they” believe. The problem is that there are too many “they’s” and they have been killing all the other “they’s” who do not believe- the way they should. Enough of the “they’s and them’s“. We are ONE for Christ’s sake! Continue reading ‘# 34- Killing Doesn’t Please God!’
Making Jesus a sort of divine super being (Superman if you will), when He was a human being was an early heresy in the coming church. Docetism was an error with several variations concerning the nature of Christ. Generally, it taught that Jesus only appeared to have a body, that he was not really incarnate, (Greek, “dokeo” = “to seem”). Ignatius of Antioch (died 98/117) and Irenaeus (115-190), and Hippolatus (170-235) wrote against the error in the early part of the second century. Docetism was condemned at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, but it’s alive and well today in many denominations. Continue reading ‘# 33- Docetic Delusions!’
Last year when the Gospel of Judas came out of course the radical right wing of fundamentalism Christianity yelled and screamed. It’s a fake, it’s a fake. The Gospel of Judas gives a different view of the relationship between Jesus and Judas, offering new insights into the disciple who betrayed Jesus. Unlike the accounts in the canonical Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, in which Judas is portrayed as a reviled traitor, this newly discovered Gospel portrays Judas as acting at Jesus’ request when he hands Jesus over to the authorities. So, let us reason a little here. I know it’s not the religious thing to do, but let’s try to use a little common sense. Just a little? Continue reading ‘# 32- Give Judas A Break!’
On the surface who could argue with the lead title to this commentary? If I were talking about life outside of earth, some might argue and disagree even though no one knows; however, I am talking about my faith- Christianity! I overheard some nutcase on Bill O’Reilly yesterday condemning Mitt Romney, who is running for president. Why? Romney is a Morman! And of course ALL Mormons are going to HELL and in fact everyone who didn’t agree with this wacko is going to hell. How convenient that he knows all and is one of the IN crowd! How sad that he’s too representative of so many Christians today. Continue reading ‘# 31- We’re Not Alone!’
This is a follow up to a commentary on LRCHouston, dated June 4th. So, you might start there or read this one first- whatever!
My point in the LRCHouston post was that too many Christians who try and make nearly every event in the Bible LITERAL, come across as not making much sense. Yes, God can do any and all miracles, but come on! Do we have to make Jesus the third astronaut and launch Him from the pad at Bethany? I don’t think so: however, there are many who do. But let’s look at two principle arguments that might help you accept a “dematerialized- glorious body” account in a different way. Continue reading ‘#30- A Realistic Resurrection’
St. Jerome said, “Nothing is so unclean as a woman in her periods; what she touches she causes to become unclean. So what if one of the early church fathers has such an opinion. It’s when the church adopts such “blood phobias” to deny people sacraments, mediation, and services that we’ve gone a bit too far. Leviticus 15:19-24 is one such example. Leviticus 18:19 is another wherein it’s written, “You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness.” What’s up with all this religious junk anyway? Continue reading ‘#29- The Blood Phobia’
I know I’m going to make a lot of Catholics mad: however, I am an equal opportunity offender. Protestants are the main focus of my attention though. The thrust of this web site after all is to question those things that really make no sense- according to me of course; however, I hardly stand alone on any of these modern-day “95 Theses“. In fact, I stand with the majority in most of them, but I live in the midst of the minority. Did you follow that? Continue reading ‘#28- The Mary-Making Myth’
