Hail Mary Prayer

How can we pray? How should we pray? How effective is prayer? In the Old Testament, Micah asks the question in chapter 6 (vs 6-7) in a different way. He wants to know if sacrificing animals is what should be done and if so how many does God want? In the New Testament, we’re told that the prayer of a righteous person “availeth much“. What’s that really mean King James? Continue reading ‘Hail Mary Prayer’

The Lord Is My Light And My Salvation!

What the heck does that mean? How easy this phrase rolls of the tongues of people that are called Christians. What is salvation anyway? Is it as easy as most churches in America say it is? Magic salvation- simply say Jesus is your savior and you are IN! Salvation and baptism, baptism and salvation; a one two punch and you’ve done the deal. Or so many say. Continue reading ‘The Lord Is My Light And My Salvation!’

Sola Scriptura

The evangelical, protestant, and reform battle cry! Sola Scriptura- only the Scriptures! It was one of the half dozen slogans that came out of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. But, what does it mean? It is most often interpreted as the belief that Scripture is the only inerrant rule for deciding issues of faith and morals. And a subtle point that’s been lost on many denominations is that it also implies that each person must interpret it individually, outside of any ecclesiastical authority. Continue reading ‘Sola Scriptura’

Asking Question

Obviously, I get asked a lot of questions. That’s the point of this web site. I try to see none as a stupid question. And I try to not give a stupid answer! When involved in the religious and spiritual sphere, I get asked a lot of trick questions; however, I try to keep the focus as one of interplay and dialogue. The answer I give is not as important as are the thoughts it gives to the questioner. Continue reading ‘Asking Question’

Who Is God The Father?

Don’t you wish you really had the answer to that question? Why couldn’t God have made life easier? I mean, being God, He’s capable of doing anything He wants. It’s in His job description. And yet we search here and there in what seems like a futile attempt to find this elusive God. Is He out there, hidden somewhere in the black universe? Is he somehow within us. Both? Continue reading ‘Who Is God The Father?’

Church Emergent?

It seems to me that we are on the verge of one of those spiritual breakthroughs. It may not come for ten years; however, you know that the baby is on the way. Spiritual things just take longer to birth- much longer. After all the birthing is a spiritual thing and the church is usually standing in the way. Isn’t that paradoxical? Would you believe sad? Continue reading ‘Church Emergent?’

Leaving Home

I’m amazed at people that stay in a toxic relationship. Psychologists call it co dependency. I call it more than strange: why would a person stay, and not be leaving abusive relationship? But then sometimes toxic shock isn’t recognized until you’re half asleep and unable to work up the energy to anything but sleep more deeply. Continue reading ‘Leaving Home’

Mythos & Logos

One of our difficulties in getting a grip on spiritual reality is that we’re a product of a society, a people, 2,000-4,000 years removed from us. They saw the world much differently than we. Those who wrote the Bible were far more mythological than we want to admit. But, they were so little informed in an understanding of the scientific make-up of the world. They thought the world was flat, geocentric, and small. We know the geocentric model is false and we have adopted the heliocentric theory, forgiven Galileo, but the struggle is so much deeper. Continue reading ‘Mythos & Logos’

God Only Knows!

What’s “ISNESS without limitations“? Thoms Keating is one of many that are now in a stream that speaks more of the BEING of God than the PERSON of God. He joins one of the most important Protestant theologians of the last century, Paul Tillich who felt that God was more of a REALITY than anything else that we could describe. Where is all of this going? What’s your picture of God? Continue reading ‘God Only Knows!’

Fear Of God- Justice!

It’s scary to wake up one day and see that you’ve missed the big picture of God’s heart. It’s reassuring though to find out that you discovered an error in your life that you have time to correct before the lights go out. Sweet-n-sour sauce. You might say that I’ve been in a “corrective pattern” for about seven years now. And it’s accelerating, not slowing down. I’ve awakened to the reality that too much of my life was spent on ME, indiviudalism, personal salvation, while the heart of God was being sorely ignored. Let me explain. Continue reading ‘Fear Of God- Justice!’
