Children At Play!

Jesus laughed, he cried, and he PLAYED! Playing is what kids do well and it’s sadly also what most Christians do at all- or seldom! Dancing is for heathens. Having a glass of wine is the first step towards an eternal hell. And, going to a PARTY is a temptation to be avoided. So, isn’t it strange that JESUS attended parties and not only drank wine but MADE WINE?

How did they who call themselves CHRISTIANS move so far from FOLLOWING Jesus, the One who became the Christos?

God forbid a person not go to church on Sunday, or worse yet, set up an alternative date to come together as a community of believers. How quickly our nation has forgotten that Sunday go-to-meeting-day (and specifically the 11:00am time) was a “Luther invention” to accommodate his Saturday night drinking binges. I wonder how we’ve strayed from the word attributed to Jesus by (Mark 2:27) that “the Sabbath is for PEOPLE- not people for the SABBATH”.

How quickly we have forgotten the respect Jesus had for CHILDREN and the many stories, metaphors, and parables he left us to help us stay in touch with reality. Children are to be the teachers of adults if we’ll but listen. “Unless you adults change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom (might we add Queendom as well?) of God (Matthew 18:3).

Fundamentalists have become so enamored and focused on the events leading to the death of the historical Jesus that they no time for the PLAY and the SENSE OF HUMOR that’s obviously a big part of his life. Jesus was big into what Matthew Fox calls “psychic justice” of just being a KID at heart with a “PURE HEART” (Matthew 5:8). we must get back to the MYSTERY of the Cosmic Christ, the FUN or being alive and interacting with people with JOY, and of course, developing the TRUST of a CHILD!

Hey! Can you come out and PLAY?

I love Wednesday and Friday nights when we have PLAY TIME at LRC. And we really don’t even need SAND! :-)
