Children of Light (Part #2)

The first part of this three-part commentary dealt with the “children“. Now on to the “light“, which will need to be done in two parts. So, one more commentary will follow. On numerous occasions the Bible speks of us as being “children of light” and the question is how do we interpret this? Is this a metaphorical statement or do we follow the literal fundamentalists? Interestingly, you might even find some literalists who would hedge on the literal meaning, just when I would not.

There are two primary Greek words that are translated by the King James scribes into light. You know how they were. There’s a natural light such as that which a candle fire would represent: something natural, physical, and initiated by man that you’d find in Matt. 5:15 or II Peter 1:19. The Greek word “luchnos” though is greatly different than “phos” which is a Greek word signifiying a light which is never kindled and thus never quenchable.

In other words, “this light” is a spiritual-supernatural light and that’s the word used for light where we are told that we are “children of light“.

Those references, depending upon translation, would be found at John 12:35-36, I Thes. 5:5, and Ephesians 5:8. Think it not strange that we’re called “children of Light” since Jesus called Himself the LIGHT! The King James boys missed in their interpretation of the light in John 5:5 wherein they say John was a LIGHT when the natural Greek word is used there and the REB (Revised English Bible) boys corrected it and called him a LAMP (a natural light). But, I digress.

The Old Testament has the same situation.

Have you ever wondered why we see on the FOURTH day the creation of the SUN, STARS, and MOON, and yet way back on the FIRST DAY God said let there be LIGHT? Light you say? Sure! The 4th day light is natural light from very hot suns and stars. The 1st day light is the spiritual light. Can you say BIG BANG?

So, now that we have the technical formalities out of the way, let’s move on to just HOW we are truly the children of light and in so doing, let’s rid ourselves of the nasty little sinful creatures we’ve been told that we are- even from birth according to original sin.

Why would God birth us in sin-originally to boot? Can you say original blessing?

I can. I AM!
