Cocooning is a relatively new phrase tha’s often times attributed to Faith Popcorn, a futurist, and tredny marketing guru. Among her predictions for 2006 were two macro trends: Cocooning, our desire to shelter ourselves from the harsh realities of our world; and Fantasy Adventure, our hunger for the new and unconventional. I’m all for both but I’d change the definition of the former. Here’s what I see.
I cocoon so I CAN face the harsh realities of life, not avoid them!
Bible #101: Sunday, the Sabbath is no longer a specific day, as it was under the Old Testament. Living in the New Testament means the Sabbath is a Person- Jesus Christ! He is our REST!
I find it a rare day that I can go without spending several “alone moments” with Him. I desperately need time alone with God- cocooning if you will, so I can go back at it. When I envelop myself with nothing but Him (meditation and contemplation), I find answers that are needful. The answers seldom come while quiet but moments later, out of the cocoon, or later in the day- out of NO WHERE, because I have been NOW HERE (as Eckert Tolle would say).
Parker Palmer said, “The soul is like a wild animal- tough, resilient, savvy, resourceful, self-sufficient. It knows how to survive in hard places. But it also shy. Just like a wild animal, it seeks safety in the dense underbrush.”
The more times throughout the day that I can cocoon, the more you’ll like me.
You don’t have to spend an hour or two being “quiet“. Several 5-10 minute “time outs” will serve you well. However, you have to really be on your game because the ego refuses to shut down. Being still is only part of the process. Telling the mind to go to hell, shut up, and take a hike is a lot harder than you’d imagine.
It really is a secret to success, but how can make money by telling people to do nothing?

So, is that why you’ve gotten so nice in your old age? Cocooning? I wish you would have had that clue YEARS AGO!!!:):):):):)
