How many people have been killed over words, the definition of concepts, or doctrines? Let’s not go there!
Suffice it to say that an on-going battle has been over creationism and evolution. Who can forget the Scopes Trial— informally known as the Scopes Monkey Trial? It was an American legal case in 1925 in which high school biology teacher John Scopes was accused of violating the state’s Butler Act which made it unlawful to teach evolution.
We are still fighting today over what school text books can and cannot say.
The Scopes Trial drew intense national publicity, as national reporters flocked to the small town of Dayton, to cover the big-name lawyers representing each side. William Jennings Bryan, three time presidential candidate for the Democrats, argued for the prosecution, while Clarence Darrow, the famed defense attorney, spoke for Scopes, who was found not guilty- on a technicality.
But, I digress into history.
Life requires BOTH creation and evolution. Thomas Troward writes, “Creation and evolution are not opposed to one another. They are only the earlier and the later stages of the same process- the perpetual urging on of Spirit for self-expression in infinite varieties of form.’ We fight to stand in that Either-Or realm o religious one-upmanship, when so many things are And-Also.
That which the Spirit starts, you and I have to finish.
The Spirit never does a flawed job; however, we too often never follow up or else we push too many things into the creative realm rather than us taking the responsibility for our role in life. How’s your EVOLVING going these days anyway?
