I am afraid we’re going to look back one day and realize that what we believed was more as a result of cultural forces than sound theological doctrines. Look, the only way we have of conceptualizing God is through language! And guess what? Language is cultural!
How much of our theology is culturally generated? How much of My God is real? Sure God is real but am I loving and following the real God? Or, am I following some artificial, religious, and denominationally constructed diety? I knonw that God is love as an example; however, even that is a metaphor. He isn’t really LOVE- He is “like love”.
As Dave Tomlinson put it, “If theology is to make any sense, it must not only use language, but it must use the language of its surrounding culture, which in turn affects what theology is saying and how it is understood. Theology must always be formulated and reformulated as cultural conditions change.”
So, who is my Jesus and my God? Am I getting it right? Did the writers of the Testaments get it right as they wrote out of their culture (I don’t believe in plenary verbal inspiration). This God stuff is not easy stuff to figure out. It’ll drive you to your knees, won’t it? It does for me.,
