People are so frantic about putting a ribbon or label on every person and then placing them neatly in a box that we can put on the shelf for future reference- if need. Let’s take the two barrel fundamentalist’s question. Do you believe in Adam & Eve and the virgin birth? If I answer YES, the questioner interprets me as saying I believe it LITERALLY. If I answer NO, the questioner would label me a heretic and not a true Christian. Damned if we do, and damned if we don’t.
Let me be more specific.
Do I believe there’s a God in heaven who made the world like a potter make a vase, who created Adam & Eve as the first people to live on the planet, who sinned thereby needing to sent an interventionist Son down from heaven to play the lead role of God in the flesh, and who will be coming back on clouds from heaven one day to rescue the world, all except for those who have never confessed the Son’s name (Jesus in English) as they will eternally be tortured for there finite sins.
NO! In fact HELL NO!
But, that’s the currency of the church and if you want to be a Christian you have to buy in that those are the FACTS. That those stories describe what is TRUE regardless of whether they happened or not, seems to not matter to the religious. History records what DID happen; myth describes what is TRUE. The story of Adam & Eve or the virgin birth are REAL, not because they were factual events that took place in time and space, in history, but because they tell us something profoundly TRUE about our world and ourselves.
So, I stand as “damned” by those who seem to think everything in the Bible is LITERAL!
And I stand LOVED by Abba Father!
