Danger On Both Sides

Who can speak of God with any intelligence? What is there that we could say that would be descriptive to any degree of satisfaction? As Henri de Lubac once said, “To speak of God is as dangerous as it is necessary.” Do you ever feel that? Pope Leo III, who spoke in Latin (but of course) in the early 9th century put it this way, “The difficulty of expressing oneself arises from the same source as the need for not keeping silence”, or Inde oritur diffucultas fandi, unde adest ratio non tacendi, in honor of Pope Benedict’s command to go back to Latin.

I take very seriously and soberly my walk and journey with the Lord, though many would be shocked to hear of such.

The real danger here though is that there’s no excuse for silence in light of all that Jesus did and who God is. I find it better to err on the side of “attempting” to express my love and His for us than to not make the effort at all for fear of being wrong.

I’m falling towards you Father- catch me! :-)

If we wait to find the exact words, the precise theology, the perfect doctrine, we will nevedr speak at all. God’s truth is on the one hand so exalted that human language can do nothing but wound it. While I fear every time I stand in the pulpit (so to speak), nevertheless, I know I have led some astray with my ignorance, my zeal, or my passion for those things that I see and feel in my spirit. Even a tone too weak, or an emphasis too strong for one facet over the other can be misleading to some.

Thus we are ultimately faced with our life- our daily witness.

Outside the bounds of the words we speak, are we living life LARGE? Can our overall witness, not the isolated and incidental stumbles along the rocky path of life, be one that should encourage people to seek the Lord? The delicate balance on the beam of truth, we cannot help but fall from time to time, but how long did we walk it? How often did we get back up for another try?

Fall we will!

But will we keep giving it another go? Like NOW? :-)

  • ALWAYS! We are never to give up. But even then He will catch me and set me up for another try. Not to say that lightly. I forgive you and you forgive me and before that He forgave us both! And that brings such PEACE to live large!
