The definition of EGO has many stream and tributaries; however, for me the simplicity of the ego is that it’s the compilation of the thoughts and ideas that we have about ourselves.
All THOUGHTS initially come from the EGO.
Intuition and inspiration comes via the Spirit and later we translate such feelings into thoughts (some correct and others not so much). The ego doesn’t desire something because it is right and good, but because it will contribute to our self made identity. It will make us more attractive, powerful, or influential.
Or, so the EGO thinks!
Most of our and the world’s suffering comes because we have gone beyond NOTICING things that go on around us (that is important you know) and we’ve moved to a place where we OWN or have become ATTCHAED to a thought (after all it is OUR thought). We take a position or a stand and if we don’t get our way we’re humiliated, defeated, or somehow cheated out of what it was we desired.
Where did that ATTACHMENT come from anyway?
We create a story about what has been, what is, and what we want to be (our desires) which means the FOCUS is on ME. The mind usually obsesses on one particular things at a time be it an offense, a fear, or some material thing that we DESIRE (think new dress, a new car, a new friend, or getting rid of a current friend).
We’re addicted to our DESIRES and yet we seldom stop and ask ourselves why that is.
The bottom line is that when we become ATTACHED to a THOUGHT it’s a pretty good bet that life will become one BIG DRAMA after another until it is over, and then sometimes never as we hold on to those wounds for years to come.
Don’t do that!
A man asked Lord Buddha “I want happiness.” Lord Buddha said “First remove the “I”, that’s ego.
Then remove “want”, that’s desire.
See now, you are left with only “happiness.”
“Desire is the cause of all suffering.” Buddha
“I have a totally different concept of desire. Firstly, desire itself is Existence. Desire without any object, desire without being goal-oriented, unmotivated desire, pure desire, is Existence. The energy called desire is the same energy as Existence.
Desire has not to be destroyed, it has to be purified. Desire has not to be dropped, it has to be transformed. Your very being is desire; to be against it is to be against yourself and to be against all. To be against it is to be against the flowers and the birds and the sun and the moon. To be against it is to be against all creativity. Desire is creativity.” –Osho
Everyone has a different definition of desire. Regardless, as we shared last night, desire if the fuel of evolution.
