Empty Ivory Towers

You can hear a pin drop in many places where Christians go looking for prey; otherwise known as converts. Those same places are usually clean as well, nothing like the Biblical mention of “messes being where the action is”. Too much of the church has still not understood that “in but not of” principle found in the gospel of John. I’m not saying the job is easy; however, it is the calling. So, like it or not, we have to mix with the world and pray for God to keep our hearts pure in the process.

In 1530, the Anabaptists formalized their confession of faith which says in part, “We are agreed on separation: A separation shall be made from the evil and from the wickedness which the devil planted in the world…” It goes on to to say how great we Christians are and how bad those that aren’t are. I am sure they meant well, but hey! How do we get the homosexuals, lesbians, and other really really bad people saved?

Or do we really want to?

And how do we justify this in light of what Paul said in I Corinthians 5:9, 10? You know, where he tells us not to associate with immoral people! Ahh, but he’s talking about Christians who are immoral, not those who are outside our community of faith. How does salt work on that which it cannot touch? How can leaven alter that which it is not in?

The church needs to get out of it’s ivory towers, beyond it’s staid arguments and questions that no one is asking, and get with the real people out there! Out there in the world is where our calling beckons us to visit and labor. The fields are white unto harvest, meaning there are people waiting for us out there. But the laborers are few indeed. Maybe we can get beyond theism though, beyond our self righteousness, beyond self absorbtion, and into His community of hurting people who are in bad need of Him that we say we embrace.

And it’s out there that we find out if we really do embrace Him. :-)
