For most of my early Christian life I was under the banner of a denomination that believed the Bible was the inerrant, infallible, perfect Word of God. As a seventeen year old youth I was in awe of Dr. Fenwick T. Fowler’s oratorical and intellectual skills. Hey, he was a Dr. too ! Why, he could even read Hebrew and Greek; or at least that is what I remember I was told. I have no proof of that. But, neither did I have any proof that the Bible was inerrant and infallible. I just accepted EVERYTHING as gospel (no pun intended). That was then, but I currently live in the NOW! Thank you Eckhart Tolle.
Before I relate the GOOD NEWS, let me lay some FACTS on you!
And if you think any of these to NOT be FACTS, I’m a willing listener.
1-We have NO, not one, original mauscripts of the New Testament.
2-We have at best 5th-10th generation copies of copies!
3-Most likely, almost ALL of the New Testament books were written in Aramaic which means much of the meanings were lost in translations to Greek or Latin (except for Lamsa’s Bible).
4-Diocletian ordered ALL Christian writings destroyed in 303CE.
5-Constantine altered many of the existing manuscripts in 331 to suit his needs (can you say Papacy stuff?)
6-Erasmus of Basel threw together many different texts in 1516 and translated them into English (here’s where we come in).
7-King James (can you say KJV?) wnated his own Bible and so he commissioned a couple dozen Scholars (?) to translate it into King’s English and when every chapter was done, the King would either approve or disapprove of the translation and then make whatever changes he wanted. And then Francis Bacon did the final editing.
And I was taught that every word in the Bible was infallible, inerrant, and Holy? Granted, I was born in Arkansas, but give this kid without shoes a Holy Break!
Maybe there’s a reason the Bible tells us the letter (word) KILLS and the Spirit gives LIFE.
The GOOD NEWS is: there is ONE GOD, Jesus told us His story and showed us how to truly live the Spirit-filled life, He proved to us that there is LIFE after DEATH, and He promsed that He’d send the Spirit to help us discern TRUTHS.
God knows He knew we NEEDED that- that’s for sure!
PS. Having said all of the above you should also know that I CHERISH the Bible, I studied it all my life (and like General Patton said, “I read it every damn day”), I utilize more than a dozen translations for comparative purposes, and it is SACRED to me!
I can agree with many of the facts written above, I must state that I still hold fast to Jesus Christ being lord though.
Hey, people in Arkansas have shoes! A perfect example being Shelby. I can’t even count the number she has. All very necessary in her eyes.:):)
Oh, I forgot. This is the modern day. Not way back when you were born.:):):)
