Familiarity Breeds Contempt

You know this principle don’t you? If you’re married, you’ll quickly realize how dangerous it is. The man notices his wife in her “sweats“, but he notices the secretary in the office in her high heels and short skirt more. She notices his lack of appreciation for meals cooked, meals made, and errands run. It happens with God as well!

We’ve heard the word “God” so much it’s meaningless!

There’s a reason that the East uses words such as OM and BRAHAM for God. They purposefully make it difficult to FINITIZE the One that isn’t and shouldn’t be.

Holding the tension between a personal and impersonal God isn’t easy to do. How can we embrace and fall in love with “Abba Father” while maintaining the reverence for the Creator of the universe who is everywhere at all times? I’m working on being able to embrace the “Father” while taking parenthood out of Him. God isn’t like a parent that we’ve made Him so symbolize. He’s not sitting on some damp cloud, behind some black hole in outer space making note of all that we do.

God isn’t into parental reward-punishment. Religion is, that’s for sure!

Ahh the magic of being in love and yet keeping it constantly mysterious. It’s not only good for a marriage, relationships in general, but it’s the best way to hold the tension with God.

I had it so ingrained in me that God, my Father, was a loving Father but…He was so willing to send me to hell, an everlasting place of burning torment for the least little thing…and it lined up pretty much with the real life I experienced and lived under my earthly physicalmale parent…so I EMBRACE readily a loving Father God of grace mercy and love who is NOT going to torment me in a living burning hell for all eternity or zap me every time I “sinned”.
