On the one hand it is sad to wake up one day and realize that you have held on to some “beliefs” that are UNTRUE! What’s worse is to realize that something is untrue, but not be willing to make the course changes to get back on solid ground. The good news is that you have the option of living the truth at least for the rest of your life- should you so desire. Sadly, many don’t!
That which is true is true and that which is not known is true as well.
And that which was not known by our forefathers (and promoted by Aristotle), but which has come to be understood as true is that the MALE SEED isn’t the “whole meal deal“! Had Matthew & Luke known what we know today, the first two chapters of the book attributed to them would not have been so written.
There would have been no Mariology!
There would be no virgin birth stories!
There would be no need to “cover up” untruths with the likes of Immaculate Conception or Annuncion.
In our forefathers lack of knowledge of how a child was brought forth, they saw the MALE as the only “source“. In a male chauvinistic society such as the we had 2,000 years ago (and some would say even today), there was added the biological ignorance of the fact that procreation needed both the twenty three chromosomes of the MALE and twenty three from the FEMALE!. Once that was discovered, there had to be a new theory of how Mary was birth ad well and thus the immaculate conception theory.
But, as Charles Hartshorne (1897 – 2000)put it, “The theory (one finds it in Aristotle) was that the mother furnishes merely the soil in which the SEED is planted. The father furnishes the form, the mother the mere matter. The father is thus the real cause of the child, not the mother. Sheer ignorance was turned into a theory insulting to women.”
And theologically wrong-headed for many!
The option, once enlightenment was revealed, would have been to admit the “father favoring fault“, and rejoiced that TRUTH was setting us free of yet another false religious belief. Unfortunately, more spit and glue was added to try and reinforce older claims no longer valid- by some.
Others have moved on!
