Religion in America has become so commercial and so smooth at how it accomplishes it’s purpose that few can discern the mine fields. They are hard to detect because they appeal to our egoic desires. In other words, we’re being sold what it is that we’re looking for, not realizing that we’re looking in the wrong places. Why are you where you are- where you worship and are fed? Do any of these five sound familiar?
#1- Political Agendas! Much of the fundamental right wing portion of the church in America has a two-pronged attack. The litmus test of your belief in God is if you are against abortion and homosexuals. Now, if you are also Republican (how could you not be?), that’s just another benefit.
#2- Wealth! The name it and claim it is “fast food” in America. Tell people how much God loves them and what He’ll do for them if they simply tithe and give thousands above that. You’re be particularly blessed if you give offerings to the pastor of course. Since when was God a parent in the sky who loves you when you give money?
#3- Exclusivity! This one covers a multitude of sins. It runs the gamut from racism and ethnicity, to what you have to do to get into heaven and out of hell. They know the way and only “they” have the keys.
#4- House Rules! Sure everyone can have them. I’m for them. But, are they reasonable, merciful, and forgiving? And most importantly, do the leaders abide by them as well?
#5- Rigid Dogma! Is how they live life look anything like what Jesus advocated? Or is the lifestyle something that Paul might have recommended. If their freedom?
Ahh, but these are just a few of the major offerings in the smorgasbord or American religion.
