You’ve probably heard it a dozen times, “Let go and let God“. There’s probably a reason one keeps hearing it: we’re not doing it. For example, I used to think that transformation was something “I did“. What a laugh. It probably makes God smile as well. I mean if we could “do it” (transformation), why haven’t we? We can’t and here’s why.
Let’s nail down my working definition of transformation: being conformed to the image of God. I doubt anyone would disagree with that definiton, but the problem comes in the process of transformation. You see we think transformation, conforming to the image of Jesus is something we do!
Wrong!
Americans are people who pull themselves up by their boot straps, we’re self-made men and women. And that means we think we’re in control of the transforming, the conforming. Wrong again intellectual minded! We are to be transformed by God, not by self. Did I mention we’re not in control? ![]()
Quaker write, Parker Palmer said, ” We are well educated people who have been schooled in a way of knowing that treats the world as an object to be dissected and manipulated, a way of knowing that gives us power over the world. We have used our knowledge to rearrange the world to satisfy our drive for power, distorting and dearranging life rather than loving it for the gift it is.”
Sad but of so true!
We have become a “do it yourself” culture! Bookstores are full to capacity with “self help” books! It’s all about ME! One of the first steps in the journey to being conformed into Jesus is to lay down our need and capacity to control. It is powerful and most often times effective; however, it simply isn’t how things work in the Kingdom. It’s really not! ![]()
