One of the greatest downfalls of religion is it’s obsession with reward-punishment and meritocracy. If Paul the apostle was right, God loved me and Jesus gave His life for me while I was a total jerk and sinning off the charts. That’s my paraphrase of Romans 5:8. But the church reminded me every week of my need to BE GOOD, follow the LAW, and BE HOLY as God was, even though Jesus affirmed that there were NONE capable of that since ONLY God was GOOD!
I am affirmed and accepted by God regardless of what any religion thinks. Now, that’s not a license to be a jerk and in fact once you truly become a disciple or follower of Jesus, doing junk isn’t anywhere on the radar screen.
As Richard Rohr once wrote, “A true Christian is invariably someone who has a met a true Christian”. Bingo!
If I AM a true Christian, then I carry His presenve. And if I carry His presence, the mere fact that I AM a HUMAN BEING is all that’s needed for a spiritual transference. Church tries to teach us to be HUMAN DOINGS! Listen, that will foloow, not lead. We ultimately DO what we ARE!
I love the stories about Mother Teresa. Most of all I am enthralled by the stories that her sisters in Calcutta tell. Not once did they ever see Mother Teresa try and convert a Hindu to Christianity. And she admonished her nuns to do the same. The goal was not to TALK ABOUT Jesus an how great He was. The goal we to BE LIKE Jesus and therein allow for the transformative transfer to take place.
Like you and I Jesus had a real body: docetism notwithstanding.
All of this means that I must stand naked before the mirror of life and see me as I really am. I must have that intiamte alone time (daily) with the Spirit within- and without. And until I embrace my humanity and realize the HUMAN BEING that I AM, I will only be a symbol of the real deal. The world needs our true nature, our reality. Homo sapien sapiens.
