Generically speaking a trump card is one that is held in reserve for winning the game. It’s a superior card that triumphs over all others. Compare it to James wherein we are told that mercy TRIUMPHS (Trumps) over judgment.
Of course anyone who has been in church for any length of time might argue that point.
Once upon a time in a theological paradigm hammered into me I came under the belief that the LOGOS trumped RHEMA. If there was a debate over what to believe, you would go back to the black or red print on white paper for the correct answer. I now am of the understanding that RHEMA (that which I HEAR from within) TRUMPS the written word (external as in Bible).
Let me take you a bit deeper in that proverbial rabbit hole wherein we’re fine as long as it is indeed a RABBIT in the hole.
Jesus TRUMPS the Bible!
Oh yeah! The gospel of John particularly tells us that the WORD became flesh and Jesus was THAT WORD. Jesus is the WORD of God. Jesus is the “express image of God (as the book of Hebrews tells us). Or as I like to say, God is most DEFINED by Jesus, but certainly not CONFINED to Jesus.
Now Jesus isn’t literally “a word” or print on paper, but a person.
However, what this means is that it is IN JESUS, that we who call ourselves Christians, see more clearly the passion and character of God than anywhere else. In other words, if there is a conflict between what the BIBLE says and what JESUS says, (and there are many) Jesus TRUMPS the Bible.
Legalists hate that statement; however, I love that principle. How about you?
