Let’s make sure that before I begin this article that you know that I know that we can’t fully know God. How can finite homo sapien sapien begin to comprehend the infinite whatever that’s been known by hundreds of names throughout history wherein dastardly deeds have been committed in His name (though He-She has no gender of course). Knowing God is much like trying to KNOW a woman!

I assume that Jesus knew God, abba Father better than all though there have been many other great men with deep insights. That God was incarnate in Jesus doesn’t preclude Jesus from standing in our shoes. Jesus was a human being.

We humans know a lot of facts- OBJECTS! But we’re pretty frail when it comes to knowing a lot of SUBJECTS- relationships. Women do the relationship thing a lot better than men. It’s just how we’re wired.And therein we come to one of the most frustrating aspects of getting to know God.

Here at the human level, third dimension, planet earth I’ve come to the conclusion that many psychologists have written about that’s the understanding that a man can pursue a woman all he wants but if she does not open up and respond, there’s no getting in- no knowing. Having proposed to my wife on four occasions, each with rejection slips, before I got an acceptance on the fifth effort, I get the point!

The door to God’s being is very much the same! That which is true about relationships with other persons is even more true with God- nurturing takes time.

We can intellectually write creed after creed about the nature of God (and we have), but that doesn’t really get to the heart of KNOWING God. It’s more knowing ABOUT God. Good stuff, needful information, but far short of the goal. The journey to knowing God relationally takes a long time because He isn’t going to cast pearls into the mud.

Words just aren’t enough!

You’ll not develop the relationship with God that you want by watching TBN, going to church every Sunday of your life, and reading a book a week. Those things can help greatly; however, what’s most required is the 1-2 punch of first practicing your relational skills with ALL humankind, and then spending quiet time with God on a regular basis.
