Oriental & Occidental

Jesus and Buddha were separated by some 500-550 years in time, more than 3,000 miles in geography, and greatly different cultures, and yet there are so many similarities. How does this happen? I’ll have to put that question on the shelf for the time being. But, let’s look at a couple of amazing similarities.

It’s said in the book of Luke that an angel (Gabriel) acts as God’s messenger to inform Mary that she would give birth to a Son of the most high. That’s not something you hear every century. Or is it?

The Digha Nikaya (a Buddhist Scripture) which was written about 250-300 years before the birth of Jesus says that devas (Hindu deities) went to Queen Maya and told her to rejoice because a son was going to be born to her.

Adding to the similarities: both were born to a traveling mother, neither births were in a home, there were heralds present, and so on.

Probably just coincidental! :-)

Both Jesus and Buddha began their quest around the age of 30 and they both instantly ran afoul of the rich, the religious, the aristocratic rules classes.

I can relate to that: at least the religious part.

It doesn’t matter where you are located geographically, how time there is between events, STUFF happens!

  • I have begun to wonder if when over the course of my life I have had “thoughts” and immediately dismissed them…Dear GOd I would be branded a heritic…if perhaps had I not “listened” to FEAR and began to search out a thing, as a wise King would do…if perhaps those thoughts were not by accident, but The Spirit trying to lead me to Truth; had I but “listened” I would be further along in my journey of tranformation to the mind of Christ.

  • Probably so! :-)
