Don’t look now but there’s a good chance “one of them” is very close to you, and hopefully not you nor I. Pharisees are not relics of the past, but the self righteous fundamentalists of today. They come in every color, creed, and denomination: even in non denominational clothing. And, I doubt that Jesus has changed His feelings about them today from what He felt and said 2,000 years ago. Saying prayers is NOT praying.
There seems to be a connectivity between being pious and also a prayer warrior (who are prayer warriors only in name, but not substance).
Jesus was simply unbending in His JUDGMENT of them. Now, how does that fit with your paradigm of a perfect human (unless since He’s wholly divine, you give Him a free pass on that). And “we” told to not judge? Ah, but I’m moving away from my planned trajectory now.
He was anything but merciful on those who loved to come across as pious with praying in public, but didn’t live a life of justice. William Evarts put it this way, “The pious Pilgrims of Plymouth, reaching the Rock, first fell on their knees, and then upon the Aborigines“.
Wanna bring it closer to home?
What dictator, general or despot doesn’t pray before battle, before going to war? George Bush admitted to having “prayed strongly” before going to war. General Patton bragged about “I read the goddamn Bible every morning of every day.”
Jesus spared no anger for those Pharisees who appeared pious in their prayers. As you read Matthew 23 you can’t help but feel the heat of His anger as Jesus brands them “Hypocrites, blind guides, fools, whitewashed tombs, lawless serpents, a brood of vipers, and murderers.”
Those are the words attributed to Him, not me!
Pity the pious then and NOW!

Know your right and it is really scary because the reflection is haunting me.
