How many gods are there?
Note I put the word under the small “g” category. Isn’t it convenient that the god that we believe in is a Christian god! How cool and lucky is that? But, wait. Isn’t it amazing that the god (Allah) the Muslims believe in is an Islamic god. And how about that Jewish god? If you’re still scratching your head or going back to reread the last couple of sentences, don’t worry. My point is that we SAY that we all believe in ONE GOD until someone defines their god in different terminology than we do.
And you don’t have to go overseas to prove the point!
On July 4, 1776 in our Declaration Of Independence we declared that ALL MEN are created equal and endowed by their Creator….”. And who is this “Nature’s God” that this same document speaks? In what I see as an amazing case of collective amnesia, today’s religious FUNDAMENTALISTS do not embrace such a concept which is why I guess there’s been a need for Fundamentalists Anonymous. I jest of course (somewhat).
As Jim Marion pointed out, “When Rev. Pat Robertson realized that Bush intended to fund the charitable works of non-Christian religions, he suddenly lost his enthusiasm for Bush’s faith-based initiative.” What’s up with that?
What’s up with the Southern Baptist Convention rejecting that our god and Allah one, but, are two separate gods? I thought there was ONE GOD! William Boykin, referring to a Muslim leader he was fighting in 1993 said, “I knew that I’d win because my god was bigger than his god.” So, are there two gods? Are we moving into the slippery slope of abandoning monotheism?
Is this god that George Bush (#43) believes in the same god that you believe in? Think about it for a moment. It was not a slip when Bush told a reporter not too long ago that, “I believe Christians and Muslims worship the same God”. Immediately, Richard Land (Director of the Conservative Evangelical Southern Baptist Convention), and Ted Haggard (President Of the National Association Of Evangelicals) repudiated Bush’s comments.
And when I wrote a couple of days ago that we needed to ditch our ethnocentrism, you thought, that’s not for us! It isn’t, eh? That should be enough to chew on for the weekend
