There are times when I pray and address God as FATHER. There are times when I pray and address God as Consciousness, Being, Eternal Field, Energy, Creator, etc. I use the former approach when I am desperate or simply feeling warm and fuzzy. I use any of the latter when I’m usually more in a contemplative mood, pondering the universe, etc. How about you?
Do you think it matters to God what you call her?
There it is- that pesky pronoun! Having grown up in a patriarchal society wherein the writers of the Bible were MALES of course Jesus called God FATHER. It’s not being macho, it’s just speaking the FACTS. Of course that was “their facts” some 2-4,000 years ago. God is a BEING, but God is not a male being. God is not a GENDER. God is SPIRIT (surely we can agree on that).
I have been PILLORIED for many things but taking away God’s MALENESS is a biggie.
Ah, let’s be friends and not worry about a NAME for the un-nameable infinite. Let’s not try and put God in any BOX, let alone a gender box. God is much bigger than anything we can imagine. How many millions of galaxies are there, not to mention universes? Wow! So, let us not stumble over pronouns or anything else. Let’s just be the LIGHT & LOVE that we are even though much of it is layered over with ego, suppositions, doctrine, cultural bias, geographical upbringing, and the like.
Isn’t life much bigger than the trivial matters that we seemingly always argue over?
And, how much better, if we could see more of the female side of God, the nurturing nature of God. We need to be reminded of the wisdom (Sophia) of God. We’ve created so much damage to women in society, and to ourselves by a “Males ONLY” country club, church, and general society.
So, lets’ use whatever pronoun is appropriate at the moment and realize that the Creator is that and yet so much more!
Amen to that!
Your commentary struck a chord with me this morning. What if the statements made in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 (and echoed by Paul in Romans 1:27) TRANSCEND the issue of sexuality altogether? Could we take our interpretation of those passages to a higher, mystical level? Perhaps we are being reminded in very dramatic terms to incorporate the Divine Feminine into our practice and understanding of Consciousness. The masculine, patriarchal God figure is moving towards the brink of extinction, but this extinction hasn’t been without its pains. We need only look at the “abominations” that have occurred in our planetary history as evidence of such.
So many are renewing their tired concepts of God, and whether we refer to the Divine Principle as It, She, Her, Him, He, They or Them, we must begin to realize that Consciousness goes beyond the organization of sex, representing a true balance of all that is symbolized by the fusion of male and female. Will we continue to have “men lie with men” (metaphorically speaking of course), or will we celebrate the mystical union of Mother Earth and Father Sky?
jbf: We really have no choices other than to come back to the truth and reality of who (what) we are- SPIRIT BEINGS; and therein love is not lost (as we know it), but true love (God’s unconditional love) is re-discovered.
PS. Wonder why so many who accept only a “literal” approach to the Scriptures you mentioned, but when it comes to stoning disobedient children (Deut. 21:18-21), they don’t apply, etc.?
