When I first discovered that the very readinf of a text was “interpreting” it, blew my mind. And then it made complete sense. And then I was depressed. And then finally I asked the Holy Spirit to do the reading for me. My life has been changed as a result. No one opens the Bible without some opinions, presuppositions, past teachings, and inate prejudices. So, obviously we’re at the mercy of our ego and attitudes it has shaped and formed in us. So what’s a person to do?
Pray, read with your head, and then slowly read with your spirit and ask God to reveal what it is you’re reading. That then becomes a reading for formation, transformation, and not just for more information.
As Robert Mulholland, Jr. put it, “We are the victims of a lifelong, educationally enhanced learning mode that establishes us as the controlling power (reader) who seeks to master a body of information (text) that can be used by us (technique, method, model) to advance our own purposes.”
Scary isn’t it!
But at least you are reading. You are aren’t you. But beyond reading, we must STUDY what it is we are reading. We must meditate and contemplate the words, the messsages and senses that we’re receiving- from the Spirit.
And you thought being and becoming a Christian was just a matter of reading the Bible?
Silly person!

I knew I should have gotten you a copy of SPELL CHECK for Christmas!
