To say that you are religious says nothing really.
To say that you belong to religion XY or Z isn’t a definitive statement at all. Let’s take a look at the BIG THREE monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Within each of those religions are THREE major divisions and many sub divisions under each of them
Each of the three major monotheistic religions can be divided into the Fundamentalists, Progressives, and the Esoteric.
And then within each of those three divisions there are the subdivisions. Among the progressives some aren’t so much so and among the conservatives there are the much more than group. Are you lost here?
Fundamentalists and Progressives within each of the major religions are pretty well understood: however, the esoteric among them not so much. If you are a Muslim though you are very familiar with the SUFIS who seem to have their own world: a deep inner spiritual world. Jews would have the same understanding with their like-minded group that’s called the KABALLAH. The Christians called their esoteric group the GNOSTICS.
Remember when religion was so simple?
