For me sacrifice and love are synonyms.
However, much of the Christian community have borrowed the word sacrifice from the Old Testament, changed the concept, and made it MURDER! Well, the sophisticated theological term is “substitutionary death”. The thinking goes like this. God so loved the world that he killed his only Son Jesus to SAVE us.
What?
Here’s some of the thinking. God is a lawgiver whose laws have been violated. Someone has to pay and God requires BLOOD which reinforces the notion that Christianity is all about sin and forgiveness (so we can go to heaven). Jesus died a SUBSTITUTIONARY death to satisfy the wrath of God.
Wrath of God?
Not for me. God is love and none of the Old Testament “sacrifices” had anything to do with a substitutionary death. God is LOVE, a love we can’t comprehend because it isn’t a human love! Once we begin to wrap our mind and emotions around that concept, our world will never be the same.
Did I mention that God is also non violent?
