Spiritual Searchers Soar
Some words scare the hell out of certain Christian groups, which is always a good thing, isn’t it?
George Barna sounded the trumpet in his book Revolution. Most Christian leaders took issue with it; however, it waas only in the conclusions drawn. One cannot argue the facts that church attendance in Europe and Amerca is falling like a rock. Adding insult to injury was the statement that the world was looking for “spirituality” at a time the church wasn’t. Ouch!
John Drane in his book, Do Christians Know How To Be Spiritual, used the term “spiritual searchers” for those who really want to be like Jesus and the kind of life He advocated.
Jesus was not religious!
The church is!
Among other things Jesus was a wisdom teacher and the perfect description of a mystic. God forbid that a Christian would ever want to be a mystic! Even though they can’t define what a mystic is, it sounds bad enough to make one say NO: regardless if you put the adjective and qualifier “Christian” in front of the noun or not.
Those who are in search of the spiritual aspects of life seem to soar effortlessly; without condemnation or insecurity.
Those in search of a religious experience can find many- most of which you really don’t want to embrace. The church has failed and is increasingly failing to connect with the God in man (woman), the Spirit, the consciousness, being, essence, and true self.
Leaders cannot take people where they have not been themselves.
But the GOOD NEWS is that you don’t have to be a leader to follow Jesus. As in Acts chapter 9, a good “guide” will do the trick, or even a co-sojourner who can hold your hand as you both make the trip. One thing is for sure, we can’t go alone.
Who’s your pilot (your concept of God), your wingman (men, women)?
