Stealing Second Base

The wisdom baseball commentators remind us often that you cannot steal second base with your foot on first base. Stealing second base requires a lead off of first, a movement away from what is safe, and stepping into liminal space. Religion, especially the conservative, fundamentalist flavor abhors such a philosophy. There’s no need of a second base, a second blessing, and anything more once you make a public pronouncement for JAY-ZUS!

Two small prepositions tell us basically the same thing- TO and FROM!

In order to get TO something (can you say NEW?), you have to move FROM something (can you say OLD?). One of the false American creeds is our thinking that we can continue to take on more and more duties, more and more activities, until the MORE chokes us to death. To move to something new this year, I must give something up from last year.

I know, it sounds totally un-American!

In my own spiritual walk I’ve so wanted to move closer TO Jesus, TO the Spirit, and TO God; however, that meant I had to move FROM a lot of my BELIEFS that kept me religiously bound. Those early childhood BELIEF SYSTEMS had me anchored to a denomination, a religiously cultural environment, and a POX on anything else that challenged my egoic foundation(s).

But how else can we overcome apathy and complacency if we don’t take a risk?

Isaiah 28 tells us that life is line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. In fact the whole of the Bible is progressive, moving from there to here and then on to over there. Only the religious mind want to build a denominational box in which those who are without are DAMNED and those who stay within are SAVED (the righteous).

Dualism at it’s best (worst!).

The problem with following the Spirit is that He’s always on the move, stealing not only second but third and then eventually ending with a suicide (of our ego) bunt that allows us to steal home! Fundamentalists just can’t quite buy into “stealing”. Maybe we could call it “embracing second”. Or maybe “inerrantly and infallibly being inspired” to move to second” would sound righteous.

Think maybe? :-)

How about “conquering” second or third?

    Or, perhaps proclaming “dominion?”

Sounds a little like “mission accomplished.” Did I say that?
