Supremacy Isn’t A Monopoly

Do I think Jesus is greater than Mohammed, Buddha, Zoroaster, et al? Absolutely! Do I think all those who are following those “others” are going to hell? Absolutely not! I know, I know.. Such a mess isn’t it. You just get started thinking one thing and then another seemingly contradictory thing shows it’s face. It’s called a paradox: holding the tension of opposites; and, not an easy thing to do. It’s so much easier to be Either-Or than And-Also.

May we as Christians, whom I think have the best ground on which to plant seeds of life, not try and pull up the grass and weeds in our back yard. That is a Matthew 13 Biblical metaphor you know. It is orthodox.

Gandhi was no small significance in his contribution to the world. And his attitude towards Jesus, the Christ I must say was more realistic and reverential than many Christians I know. Add to that the thousands of prophets and seers of other religions who cannot be ranked close to Jesus, but of whom we cannot say added nothing to man’s knowledge of God.

This seems so clear, and yet!

Whoever brings us closer to the presence of God should be commended, though no where else do we have the full access to the heart of God than we do exemplified in the life of Jesus, the Christ.

Let us not claim Occidental arrogance, but may we open the banquet table to whomsoever might want to come and dine, that we might learn more, and maybe even offer more in so doing?

Who’s coming to dinner? Maybe someone from the Orient? :-)
