The Gospel of Truth is one of the Gnostic texts from the New Testament apocrypha found in the Nag Hammadi codices.
The Dead Sea Scrolls, Nag Hammadi find, and other recent archaeological digs have been changing the landscape of modern-day Christianity. I am not talking about the Gospel “OF” Truth though but the English idiom expression, “Gospel Truth” which means: solemn truth, plain truth, a hard fact, and the very truth.
But, there are many IDIOMS that from time to time make IDIOTS of us.
>A piece of cake
>A shot in the dark
>A slap of the wrist
>A slip of the tongue
>A drop in the bucket
>Against the grain, and hundreds more!
For those that have not decided that 2,000 year old interpretations, translations, and paradigms on the life of Jesus are entirely true and literal, there’s an even deeper meaning to be mined. The Gospels are more LITERATURE than HISTORICAL documents, which doesn’t say there isn’t history in the Gospels.
The four Gospels are FOUR VIEWS!
Each writer, and we know not exactly who the authors were since none are originals and none bear the NAME that we’ve since given them, was directing their writing to a specific audience with definite goals in mind. Irenaeus informs us that the Gospels were meant to be READ ALOUD in congregations and that it wasn’t until around 185 that all four Gospels were available to the masses, and not just regionally.
This is not a put-down of any of the richness that each Gospel imparts to us.
The main point that needs to be recognized is that there are differences, contradictions, and yes errors among the four (or more) writers of those Gospels. So, to tell someone that it’s the GOSPEL TRUTH might not be the best defense in a court of law or otherwise.
Ain’t it the Truth!!
