The Limitations Of Language

Oh how I have lacked the words at various times. When my wife was killed in a plane crash, the mind went blank. When my son was killed in a car wreck my, the voice box refused to work. And when from the other emotional grid, I’ve been touched by the Creator, there simply aren’t any words to describe the encounter.

As the sage has said, we use metaphors when words fail to express us.

But even metaphors fall far short as they must since we’re talking about an infinite being- energy- whatever: see what I mean? But, we also know that mankind cannot go any further than the language and words he embraces. So we press on, or at least we surely know that we must journey onward.

There is no staying put, right?

John Shelby Spong in his latest book wrote, “Words are symbols, not only shaped by our experience but bound by time and space. God is a word we use to seek to give expression to the concept beyond our experience and bound by neither time nor space. What are we saying when we utter the word…..God”? Good question indeed!

I find it exciting that many in the scientific community and now being confronted with the results of quantum physics, which is turning their world upside down. This subtle energy, this element called photons of a unique character that’s called torsion field- IS LOVE. Milton LeRoy challenges us with this question, “If whatever attracts atoms and molecules to each other could also be called LOVE, then the source and creator of all could be called LOVE. Dare we be so simple”?

Good point: good question!

God has been a “gap-filler” for that which must give way to new language, pictures, and maybe we could even go beyond a metaphorical approach into a more factual one such as God being energy. ENERGY is no less PERSONAL than is the word-concept SPIRIT! Let us not move on to a more progressive and intimate understanding of because of language. But may we embrace the language and words that better define the experience- the TRUE EXPERIENCE!

God is LOVE!
