The Mystos Behind The Mythos

In the Hebrew section of the Bible called the OLD Testament, we read in Proverbs 25:2  (NAS) “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter”. In other words, as Jesus put it in Matthew 7:6, ‘Don’t cast your pearls before swine”. It’s the same message, just presented with a different face.

The church though has sought to put God in a box and feed us with pre-packaged doctrines that must be obeyed to the letter of the law.

Interesting that Paul said that it was that letter of the law that brought death: however, the church continues to “wax on and wax off” with dogma and doctrine that most often damage the spirit of man and seek to keep him from the exciting journey in search of the holy grail.

Ancient and sacred texts were written allegorically and mythically. To attempt to interpret those manuscripts literally and historically is a disaster in the making.  Godfrey Higgins (1772-1833 , humanist, social reformer, and author of various now-esoteric and rare books) wrote-

“When all the curious circumstances have been considered, an unprejudiced person will, I think, be obliged to admit that the ancient epic poems are original allegories, all allusive  to the same mythos, and that many of those works which we have been accustomed to call histories are but allegorized representations of mythologies on the secret doctrines of which I am in pursuit, and which have been endeavored to be concealed and perpetuated for the use of the elect, the initiated, under the veil of history- to which,  as the first object was the doctrine or mythos, the history in each case was sacrificed of made subservient.”

Whew! Talk about a long sentence.

Alas though, the point is simply this. God is a mystery as life is; however, what’s  no secret at all is that God is LOVE and we have been created in that same image! Whatcha looking like when you take a peek in the mirror?

  • Thanks for your paraphrase at the end, I was having a tough time following, digesting, and interpreting the other guy! Typical American, I still need someone to chew up the meat for me so I can digest, consume, and be nourished. Thanks for the help and guidance!

How can anyone argue with the bottom line motive of God is love and we are to be unconditional love to everyone and everything? :)
