Learn the rules to break the rules!
I believe it’s Spencer Burke who said he teaches his kids the rules of photography and they do okay. Then towards the end of the semester, he tells them to break at least two rules that they have learned and their art-work is much better. I am sure that you can take this example and do some really bad things to yourself and to others. While I agree with the example, let me change metaphors a little.
I’m not sure which commerical or product it is that’s being advertized on TV a lot these days where they package what it is you should eat (according to the experts) and you’ll lose weight.
It all sounds so good when “others” can do it for you doesn’t it! Sounds a lot like religion today. A Catholic Bishop tells a priest who he can come to listen to and who he can’t. Hey Bishop, they’ll listen to the tapes even if they can’t see the person.
A Baptist church has a thirty-something person decide which “Baptist books” are to be put in the book store. They’ll buy them on line from Amazon.com, keeper of the scrolls!
As Mike Higton wrote, “We are very good at letting ourselves off the hook. When we look for clear moral guidance, we often do so in part so that we do not have to think- so that we don not have to ponder our actions, and ask ourselves what they communicate. If we’re following the RULES, we think, we must be all right, so there is nothing further to be said.”
How sad. How wrong!
Others can only point- give us a little direction. The rest is up to us. How fast do we want to go, how far, when, if at all. It seems as though many just want information about how to get somewhere. They themselves don’t want to go. Well, at least not now, maybe later.
The more rules there are, the more death!
That’s not a license to let loose and let go of your moral compass. Qute the contrary. It’s scary territory where you have to take responsibility for your actions. You can’t blame it on what someone else said. And this is a hard behavior to follow in a society that’s looking to blame someone for everything that happens in life that’s not good.
Learn the rules, but, then THINK before you act!
And listen to that “still small voice” that’s full of wisdom.
