How has Christianity, particularly in America come to “this place“? And just what is “this place” that I am referring to? Is the main message of Christianity all about gay marriage and abortion? That’s all you hear about these days. I believe the heart of Christianity, that which was preached and lived by Jesus has been hi-jacked by the conservative, political, fandamentalist, right wing agenda. How did this happen and where did it begin? I don’t think you can blame everything on Satan or emperor Constantine. In my lifetime, it seems that this perversion of Christianity started around the 1980, with Ronald Reagan as president (not his fault), and with the Moral Majority (which never has existed)!
Christianity is not a political party! Christians are definitely not Republican though many believe that. Those with the abortion-gay marriage agenda are more likely than not (not all now) angry people, who seem to scream a lot and contort their faces with great animation. When we speak of a Jesus who was kind and loving and then act hateful to all those “sinners” out there, we turn off would be fellowship.
Many Christians are the reason many are not Christians! Got it?
Jesus and His parables were about loving people! Jesus lived a life of mercy, grace, and forgiveness. His message was come as you ARE, not as you SHOULD BE, or as “I” think you should be! There’s the big stumbling block as I see it. Why can’t we just simply love people, pray for them, and let the Holy Spirit do whatever He thinks. I mean that’s how it’s all going to work out anyway regradless of what we think or do.
Jesus spent His time helping the poor and attending to those who could fend for themselves. Sounds more like a Democratic message than a Republican one to me (and I’m not a Democrat), but what do I know? I think what I do know is that those who call themselves Christians, and Christianity in America, is going to have to change to survive! Seriously. Christianity is doing well in Africa and other third-world nations because the more true strtain of Christianity is being preached and lived. We’ve gotten off track in the last 2-3 decades and the balme is not all because of liberal Christians.
Speaking of which, here is an interesting paradigm shift that I’ve gone through. Thirty years ago, I thought “liberal” was a bad word! And anyone who said they were liberal were really communists in disguise. Commies! You do remember the USSR days, right? Being a “conservative” was a God thing! Without intending to do so, I think George Bush (a great Christian man with strong moral principles) has undone in six years what Reagan did in eight.
Five years of wars, killing, being killed, tax breaks for the rich, unheard of oil profits for the elite, and corruption unlike we’ve seen since the Nixon days in the Republican politicos have soured most Americans on what Christianity is and stands for. So sad because that was never the intent. I think it’s just God bringing us back to the fact that the agenda of Jesus is not Republican. The agenda of Jesus is not about gay rights or any one issue. Jesus came to preach the Kingdom, which is love, mercy, and forgiveness. Anything else is just a false agenda, a golden calf substitute.
Christains are just called to love others- without an agenda!
This sounds like a great and real motto to live by: “called to love others- without an agenda”. Help me Lord Jesus Christ do just that.
