The Pharisees weren’t satisfied with what Jesus did or promoted so they added a lot of requirements to the “to do” list. The Sadducees weren’t satisfied with what Jesus did either, but instead of adding to, they subtracted from. They, like Jeffereson, didn’t like all the powerful and miraculous stuff. And so, what is it that we Christians don’t like that we’ve changed? The list is a very long one I am sure, so lets stick with the basics- of which there are three.
Judaism embraced the temple life, the priesthood, and sacrifices!
Jesus came to replace the material temple with His body, the new temple: His body, the living temple And we are the temple of the Holy Spirit as well. He replaced the priesthood with with, His children- a royal priesthood, as I Peter 2:9 tells us.
And then there were the sacrifices. Can you imagine the blood. Hebrews 7:27 reminds us of the changed nature of the sacrifices. And Hebrews 9:25-28 tells us that Jesus is the final sacrifice and the end to all sacrifices.
For the first 300 years or so, those who called themselves Christians, were the first to embrace a religion where there was no temple. But along came Constantine. In 313 he makes Christianity the state religion and in 321 he declares that Sunday will be a day of rest and the day to go to church. And we’ve been meeting in temples on Sunday ever since.
Ahh, but that’s about to change. ![]()
