German philosopher Karl Jaspers coined the term, "Axial Age", to describe the period from 800-200 BCE, during which time a worldwide expansion of consciousness took place, forever changing religion, philosophy, mathematics, art and the way we see the world today. Is the human race undergoing such a spiritual metamorphosis once again? We Are Doing It!
There is absolutely no arrogance in what I am about to write; however, there is much pride (the good kind) and humility in what many of the people at LRC are allowing and doing. Many have agreed to join in a journey that is much like the ancient story, “The Quest For The Grail“. I don’t know how far down the road we can go, but I want to personally go as far as I can so that I might be an example: a good thing for any leader to do you know.
What began almost exactly two years ago, that was not know at that time, is now quite evident to me. To say that I am grateful that God has allowed and protected many in this journey is an understatement. Too often we look for God to come and “zap” us; an epiphany or an experience that propels us into greatness. And too often we forget the role we play in setting the table for an opportunity for God to work.
I have seen and experienced church life, both in America and in other nations-cultures, take several approahces as to how one finds God and is transformed. Transformation, into the image of Jesus, is the ultimate end game. At least that’s what I see life here on earth is all about.
We’ve all seen the devastating effects of one approach which is absolute and unwavering obedience to one leader. Can you say David Koresh? Every year, somewherein this world, we read of tragedies caused by people blindly following one leader who demands obedience to his culture. A current day example would be Polygamist Warren Steed Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints - a group with around 10,000 followers.
Run!
A second approach to transformation is found in those who believe that transformation is found in certain “evidences“: such as speaking in tongues, laughing, jerking, crawling on your belly like a reptile. Or, handling snakes! I’m amazed that people can really think that’s transformation, but many do!
I went to Toronto and that wasn’t for me!
A third approach to transformation would be the prosperity doctrine! If you’re making money, successful in business, own a large home, have corporate initials behind your name (can you say CEO?). Of course it also helps to be a member of a brand name church with a charismatic leader: that’s where you meet successful people.
What’s a church without bowling alleys, gymnasium, or movie theatres?
A Starbucks coffee shop is okay, or one that serves Starbucks coffee.
The fourth approach is found in many old-line denominations. For them transformation is all about do’s and don’ts. Well, at least the “don’ts“. It’s hard to find a lot of do’s except DO come to church ever Sunday! Added to that or maybe even a fifth approach would be in behavior: how you dress, when you wear what, and how. Or, just lump it into number four. Your call.
But, for me, in this season of my life, transformation is more about a process (it’s a long journey that takes time) of being conformed to the image of Jesus (it’s whose image we were formed in anyway!), and doing it primarily for the sake of others. We’re not here just for ourselves. I know, sad news isn’t it! Now, having said that, there’s a whole lot that can be further said about how you do that. I know some of it.
What began in January of 2005, now continues onward as LRC and its participants move to a culture-changing Friday night service starting December 22. Many say you can’t do that. Church is for Sunday morning only! We shall see won’t we (whomever we may be). It’s one of the smallest of things though because when you meet is a method, a custom, and only indirectly significant to personal transformation. God did not ordain Sunday at 11 am as a time to meet though.
We are doing it: being transformed (in non conventional ways- His)! How about you? Which road are you on?
