What Can Contain God?

Oh come now, this is an easy question, a throw down. You know that answer. Nothing, NO-Thing, can contain God. Now, while we easily give intellectual assent to the question and answer, it is our actions that say we’ve really not bought into the game. Or, we’re deceived about what it is we think.

It was who many would call the best known theologian of the twentieth century, Paul Tillich, who wrote, “Just as Christianity in the first century could not be contained in Judaism, so in our day Christianity can no longer be contained within religion.” And maybe that is why the last 50 years has seen a slow erosion of denominational allegiances in America.

There’s another major problem here with religion though.

Rudolf Bultmann, one of the leading New Testament scholars of the past century, looked upon the Scriptures as “mythology that needed to be demythologized“. Of course for the fundamentalists this is tantamount to an ultimate heresy.

No ONE religion can contain God. No one planet, nor universe can contain God. We SAY that but we go about acting as though it’s not true. Our religion, our denomination, or interpretation of the Scriptures, are the right ones. Our Bible is the BEST this and that. In this we see dualism and religious ago at their worst. May we walk away from such antagonistic paradigms.

May we do all we can to contain as much God-Spirit-Light as possible and may we therein just let the Spirit handle whatever we think needs to be fixed. The best thing that we can do is just get out of the way and let the Creator do what needs being done.
